Social Skills
Some older children have typical language skills but have a hard time using those skills to interact with other children in a social way. Speech therapy can help these children learn to interact with their peers in a more typical way to help foster relationships and improve interactions. Social skills deficits might look like:
-
obsessed/stuck on one or a few specific topics
-
difficulty reading social cues
-
sharing information that is not appropriate
-
difficulty understanding other people's emotions
-
has a hard time making friends
-
does not understand how to handle certain social situations
-
assumes people know what they are talking about and does not provide context
-
talks in circles
-
does not respond appropriately to comments made to them
